Certified well water labs in Oklahoma (2026)

WellTestList · Thursday, September 24, 2026 · state page

Oklahoma Water Resources Board reporting puts about 8 percent of state residents on private wells. An EPA Oklahoma private-well pilot estimated roughly 486,000 people on those wells in 2010. That is a dated estimate, not a 2026 census. Federal and state governments do not regulate privately owned wells here — you are the utility. ODEQ’s State Environmental Laboratory will test a homeowner sample through an online Water Test Request (kit mailed or picked up in Oklahoma City). Live form prices tonight start at $33 for total coliform / E. coli and $75 for the Private Well Annual package. Chemistry beyond that, oil/gas concern, PFAS, or a broader PDF go through SELS “Other” / fee-schedule panels, an accredited commercial lab, or a mail-in kit that emails a PDF.

The short version

  1. Order from ODEQ SELS — do not invent a random bottle. Use the Water Test Request form. Choose well water, then kit mailed or pick up at 707 N Robinson, Oklahoma City. Questions: 405-702-1000 / 866-412-3057 / selsd@deq.ok.gov.
  2. Respect the 28-hour bacteria clock — and do not ship Friday. Private total coliform / E. coli samples must reach the lab within 28 hours of collection. ODEQ’s private sampling guide says do not ship on a Friday or weekend. Nitrate / nitrite samples have a 48-hour hold and should travel on ice. Sample receipt window: Mon–Fri 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (except state holidays).
  3. Match the panel to the land — and to the lender. Annual baseline on the form: Private Well Annual $75 (coliform + nitrate/nitrite + pH + conductivity). Near oil or gas activity, ODEQ’s home-testing FAQ adds chloride, sulfate, sodium, barium, strontium, and conductivity — the FY27 Oil and Gas Test List is $177 (order via “Other” or call). No state rule requires private-well testing for transfer; lenders usually want at least total coliform. Or use a mail-in kit that emails a PDF.

How Oklahoma’s system actually works

Private wells are the homeowner’s job. The Safe Drinking Water Act does not cover those taps. ODEQ’s Home Water Testing fact sheet (Oct 2024) and Private Water Well Analysis fact sheet (Dec 2025) are blunt: federal and Oklahoma governments do not regulate privately owned wells; ODEQ and partners provide education and laboratory support.

The published homeowner path runs through the State Environmental Laboratory Services division — not a parish/county bottle network like Louisiana or Arkansas. You request a kit online (mail or OKC pickup), collect per the private sampling guides, return with a chain-of-custody form, and get results by email or physical mail. Personal delivery goes to the Sample Management Unit through the northeast-corner door at 707 N Robinson.

Need another lab? ODEQ’s accredited laboratory search has a Commercial Sample column for labs that accept private samples. Confirm the lab is accredited for the parameters you need — Lab Accreditation: 405-702-1000 / labaccreditation@deq.ok.gov. We are not scraping that search into an endorsement phone book tonight.

County Extension is still useful — for Oklahoma Well Owner Network screening events and for OSU Soil, Water and Forage Lab household chemistry — but those are not the certified drinking-water bacteria path lenders usually mean.

CDC and EPA both frame the annual minimum as total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH, plus whatever is a local problem. EPA’s national page still points at a PDF of state certification programs.

Options we verified

Fees and rules live on the Water Test Request form, the FY27 Lab Services Fee Schedule, the private sampling instruction PDFs, the Home Water Testing and Private Well Analysis fact sheets, OWON, the OSU Extension price list, and the mail-in product pages. What we could verify with a public URL tonight:

Verified September 24, 2026. Form prices are what the live Water Test Request listed that day (FY27). Older web-index snippets still show $31 / $36 / $95 “Water Wellness” — those are not on the live form tonight. Confirm on the form you submit before you pay.
Option What they offer Listed cost Catch
ODEQ SELS — Total coliform / E. coli Online request; kit mailed or OKC pickup. SM 9223B total coliform & E. coli. Phone: 405-702-1000 / selsd@deq.ok.gov. $33.00 on the live form and FY27 fee schedule (P/A or MPN). Bacteria only. Must arrive within 28 hours; do not ship Friday/weekend. Card payments add 2.25% + $2 portal fee.
ODEQ SELS — Private Well Annual Test List Total coliform & E. coli P/A, nitrate/nitrite, pH screen, conductivity — the annual baseline ODEQ’s FAQ recommends. $75.00 on the live form and FY27 schedule. Still respect the 28-hour bacteria clock on the coliform bottle. Not a full metals / oil-gas panel.
ODEQ SELS — Private Well Diagnostics Test List Annual list plus hardness, calcium, copper, iron, manganese, sodium. $175.00 on the live form and FY27 schedule. Broader homeowner diagnostic — still not the Oil and Gas Test List or a PFAS panel.
ODEQ SELS — à la carte (form) Nitrate/Nitrite; Lead; Metals Screening for Drinking Water (Sb, As, Ba, Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Tl, U, Se). Nitrate/Nitrite $38; Lead $33; Metals Screening $115 on the live form. Nitrate bottle: 48-hour hold, ice recommended. Metals list does not include bacteria — order coliform separately if you need both.
ODEQ SELS — Oil and Gas / Real Estate lists (FY27 PDF) Oil and Gas Test List: barium, strontium, sodium, chloride, sulfate, conductivity. Daycare / Real Estate Test List: coliform + nitrate/nitrite + lead. Oil and Gas $177; Daycare / Real Estate $104 on the FY27 schedule. Not form checkboxes tonight — choose Other or call SELS. Home Water Testing FAQ lists the same oil/gas analyte set for nearby drilling.
Oklahoma Well Owner Network (OWON) County Extension events. Screening for nitrates, TDS, pH, E. coli presence. Email results ~1 week. Contact: owon@okstate.edu / 405-744-7093. Program page still says free screening. Upcoming events listed tonight show $15 a sample — confirm with the event / county Office. Screening / education, not a substitute for a lender-named certified analysis. If you need certified results now, OWON points you to DEQ.
OSU Soil, Water and Forage Lab — Household Water County Extension bottle path. Chemistry: Na, Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, EC, pH, nitrate-N, chloride, sulfate, TDS, hardness. Price list effective July 1, 2025. $18.00 (+ $0.50 bottle deposit, reimbursed on return). No bacteria. Not a drinking-water certification path for lenders. OWON says the same.
ODEQ accredited laboratory search Statewide accreditation search. Filter for labs that accept commercial / private samples. Ask each lab for a quote. Written for compliance labs. Confirm parameter accreditation before you drive. We are not republishing search results as a phone book.
Free statewide private-well PFAS program We searched ODEQ, OWON, and related PFAS communications for a currently free homeowner PFAS panel. None confirmed tonight. FY27 schedule lists EPA 537.1 PFAS (regulated compounds) at $265 as a paid SELS option. ORWA / DEQ free PFAS work we found targets small public systems — not private wells. Do not invent a free private-well PFAS signup.

A Dec 2025 ODEQ fact sheet still describes a “Water Wellness” panel (chloride, sulfate, conductivity, pH, hardness, nitrate/nitrite, copper, lead, iron, manganese, sodium). That name is not on the live request form tonight — Annual ($75) and Diagnostics ($175) are. If someone quotes you $95 Water Wellness from an old bookmark, call SELS and confirm the current package name and price.

What Oklahoma guidance actually warrants

Match the panel to the land. ODEQ Home Water Testing, Private Well Analysis, EPA private-well pages, and CDC testing guidance line up on the core schedule:

When the Certificate of Analysis or the SELS written results arrive, more: how to read a well water report.

Hardware-store strips are screening-only. They are not an annual well test and they are not what a lender means by “tested.”

Hold times and collection

Plan around the 28-hour bacteria receipt clock. ODEQ’s private total coliform guide: samples must be returned within 28 hours; samples not received within method holding time are rejected; do not ship on a Friday or weekend. Nitrate / nitrite private samples: return within 48 hours, on ice; if temperature is not <4°C, a qualifier may void real-estate acceptance. Personal delivery: Sample Management Unit, northeast corner of 707 N Robinson, Mon–Fri 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. except state holidays. Courier to 707 N Robinson (OKC 73102); USPS to P.O. Box 1677 (OKC 73101-1677). Follow the kit instructions — do not rinse the bottle, do not invent a substitute container. More on bacteria clocks after weather events: what to test after a flood.

Mail-in kits that work from Oklahoma

Independent mail-in labs ship to and from Oklahoma as ordinary domestic US kits. They email a PDF. They are not selling you a softener in the same breath. For a lender or local compliance ask, confirm the analyzing lab meets what the underwriter named. Listed prices we checked on September 24, 2026:

Those are listed prices, not coupons. Kits change. Read the current product page before you buy. If the SELS $33 / $75 path covers your question — and you can hit the 28-hour clock — check that path before you spend $200 on a national kit for the same core bacteria question. For a broader baseline PDF when OKC logistics do not fit, mail-in is the honest next step.

Side by side for an Oklahoma well

Typical paths for an Oklahoma private well in 2026. Not a bid.
ODEQ SELS OWON / OSU Extension Mail-in (Tap Score / NTL)
Best for Certified annual bacteria + nitrate when the 28-hour clock works; oil/gas or metals when you order the right list Low-cost / event screening; $18 household chemistry without bacteria Broader baseline panel and a PDF when OKC scheduling does not fit
PDF? Email or physical mail — choose on the request form OWON: email ~1 week. OSU: lab report — ask how a copy arrives Yes. Email is the product
Sales visit? No No No
Lender / CoC? Chain of custody is required. Form asks about real estate closing. Ask if Daycare/Real Estate $104 or a named commercial lab is what the underwriter wants Usually not what the bank means by “certified.” Screening only Sometimes not. Ask before you sample. See home purchase / lender CoC

Real estate and lenders

Oklahoma does not require private-well testing for real-estate transfer; lenders often do. ODEQ’s request form asks whether this is a real estate closing or refinance. The FY27 schedule’s Daycare / Real Estate Test List ($104: coliform + nitrate/nitrite + lead) is a published package even though it is not a form checkbox — call SELS. Nitrate samples that arrive warm can get a qualifier that may void real-estate acceptance. If the underwriter named a specific commercial lab and chain-of-custody form, use that lab. A self-scheduled SELS bacteria result can be a perfectly good health check and still bounce at the bank if chemistry or a named lab was required. More: home purchase / lender chain of custody.

Remind me to test my well every year

CDC and EPA say to test a private well at least once a year. We’ll send one email a year, about when your test is due, with your state’s lab options.

We only use your email for the yearly reminder. Unsubscribe anytime.

Thanks, you’re on the list. We’ll email you once a year when it’s time to test your well. Nothing else.

What to do in Oklahoma

  1. Start at deq.ok.gov/water-test-request. Questions: 405-702-1000 / 866-412-3057 / selsd@deq.ok.gov.
  2. Annual baseline: Private Well Annual $75, or bacteria alone at $33. Hit the 28-hour clock; do not ship Friday.
  3. Oil / gas nearby: ask for the Oil and Gas Test List ($177 on FY27) or the FAQ analyte set. Diagnostics $175 covers a different metals/hardness set — confirm which you need.
  4. Screening event nearby: check OWON / county Extension. Confirm whether tonight’s event is free or $15.
  5. Chemistry without bacteria: OSU Household Water $18 via county Extension — not a certified bacteria path.
  6. PFAS: no OK private-well free PFAS program found tonight. SELS EPA 537.1 ($265) or a Method 533 / 537.1 mail-in panel.
  7. If you want a broader PDF this month and the 28-hour / OKC clock does not fit, use Tap Score / SimpleLab or National Testing Laboratories (Watercheck).
  8. Match the panel to the land. Bacteria every year. Nitrates every year, especially before a newborn. After a flood, start with disinfection and bacteria.

Not this if…

  • A lender named a local commercial lab and a chain-of-custody form. Use that lab. Confirm accreditation on ODEQ’s search — do not assume the SELS $33 bottle alone satisfies the underwriter.
  • Someone offered a free in-home “test” that ends in a softener pitch. That is not on this page. See the Home Depot free-kit comparison.
  • You only wanted a strip from the hardware aisle. Fine as screening-only. It is not a certified analysis.
  • You treated the OSU $18 household test as a certified bacteria result. It has no bacteria. OWON and Extension say so.
  • You shipped a bacteria bottle Friday for a Monday fantasy that blows the 28-hour clock. The rejection list does not care about your weekend.
  • You paid from an old bookmark that still said Water Wellness $95 / coliform $31. Live form tonight is $33 / $75 / $175. Confirm before you write the check.
  • You assumed every OWON event is free because the intro says “free screening.” Upcoming listings tonight show $15 — read the event line.
  • You assumed ORWA / DEQ free PFAS testing covers private wells. The free work we found is for small public systems.
