Certified well water labs in Louisiana (2026)

WellTestList · Wednesday, September 23, 2026 · state page

LDH’s Private Well Initiative progress reports cite about 587,000 people — approaching 13 percent of the state — on privately owned domestic wells in 2010. That is a dated estimate, not a 2026 census. LDH/OPH will test a private drinking-water sample for total coliform and E. coli through parish health units and OPH labs. Self-collect is listed at $40 (plus a $3.50 online service fee when you order by card). Chemistry, metals, and PFAS go through an LDH-certified chemistry lab, or a mail-in kit that emails a PDF.

The short version

  1. Order a bacteria kit online or at your parish health unit — do not invent a random bottle. Self-collect and drop at a parish health unit or OPH lab for $40 (check or money order in person; online adds a $3.50 service fee). Prefer a sanitarian to collect? LDH lists sanitarian options on the online order tool and the sampling-instructions page — confirm the current total before you pay. Questions: 1-888-293-7020.
  2. Respect the 30-hour clock and Monday–Thursday testing. Samples cannot be over 30 hours old at the time of testing. LDH/OPH labs test private water samples Monday through Thursday at 2 p.m. (excluding holidays). Use the Private Water Well Sample Drop-Off Sites app (linked from LDH) for the nearest drop point and hours — do not invent parish hours from memory.
  3. For nitrate, metals, VOCs, or PFAS — and for a lender letter — leave the plain bacteria bottle. Use LDH’s certified chemistry lab list (PDF dated 6/29/23 — confirm current cert). For real-estate / bank paperwork, LDH’s online path is Water & Sewer Approval Request for Loan Letter ($150 on the egov tool tonight). Or use a mail-in kit that emails a PDF.

How Louisiana’s system actually works

Private wells are the homeowner’s job. The Safe Drinking Water Act does not cover those taps. LDH’s Private Well Testing Information page and the Private Well Owner Network frame annual maintenance, bacteria or chemical testing after hurricanes and floods, and how to start with your local parish health unit sanitarian.

Bacteriological sampling is the published homeowner path. LDH’s sampling instructions are blunt about clocks: private samples are tested Monday–Thursday at 2 p.m., and cannot be more than 30 hours old at testing. Kits ship when you order online, or you pick up / drop at an OPH laboratory or parish health unit. The same page notes that samples collected by someone other than regulatory / approved personnel are considered unofficial and cannot be used for legal purposes — relevant if a lender or agency named an official path.

OPH laboratory drop points published on that instructions page include Central Laboratory (Baton Rouge), Amite Regional, Shreveport Water Laboratory, Lake Charles Laboratory, and Rapides Parish / Alexandria Regional. Treat those as starting addresses from LDH — confirm receiving hours with the lab or the drop-off sites app before you drive with a bottle.

Chemistry is a different door. LDH’s Laboratory Certification program certifies labs for drinking-water chemistry and microbiology under the SDWA. A public chemistry list PDF is titled as of 6/29/23. Many names on it are utility or parish water labs. Most of those may not accept homeowner walk-ups — call first. Lab Certification contact listed on the page: 225-219-5200.

CDC and EPA both frame the annual minimum as total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH, plus whatever is a local problem. EPA’s national page still points at a PDF of state certification programs.

Options we verified

Fees and rules live on the LDH well-testing hub, the bacteriological sampling instructions, the egov order tool, the real-estate page, the chemistry labs PDF, and the mail-in product pages. What we could verify with a public URL tonight:

Verified September 23, 2026. Prices are what the pages listed that day. LDH lists different sanitarian totals depending on the channel — confirm on the order form or at the parish unit before you pay.
Option What they offer Listed cost Catch
LDH/OPH self-collect bacteria path Kit pickup / drop at parish health unit or OPH lab, or online order with kit shipped home. Total coliform / E. coli. Return to preferred parish unit or lab. Phone: 1-888-293-7020. $40 in person (check or money order to LDH/OPH/Lab). Online: $40 + $3.50 service fee (credit card). egov “Self Service Well Testing” shows $40. Bacteria only. Must be ≤30 hours old at testing; labs test Mon–Thu at 2 p.m. Self-collected samples are labeled unofficial / not for legal purposes on the instructions page. Ask how written results arrive if you need a file.
LDH sanitarian-collected bacteria A local sanitarian visits, collects the sample, and returns it to the laboratory. Hub page frames this as the sanitarian path; egov lists “Sanitarian Services Well Testing.” Hub well-testing page: $150 (includes lab analysis). Sampling instructions (online): $75–$100 + $3.50. egov tool tonight: $75. Confirm the live total on the form you use. Published totals disagree across LDH pages. Do not invent a single “official” price from memory — use the order screen or parish unit quote. Still bacteria-focused unless you picked the loan-letter path.
Water & Sewer Approval Request for Loan Letter Online option on the egov private-well tool. Sanitarian collects and transports; results usually returned to sanitarians within 48 hours; department drafts a letter for owner and/or lender. $150 on the egov tool tonight (label: loan letter for your bank). State does not require private-well testing for transfer — lenders do. This path is for the LDH letter, not a full chemistry panel. If the underwriter named metals / nitrate / a specific lab, ask before you treat bacteria + letter as enough.
LDH certified drinking-water chemistry labs (PDF) Statewide chemistry certification list linked from Private Well Testing and Lab Certification pages. Lab Certification: 225-219-5200. Ask each lab for a quote. No homeowner walk-up price sheet on the PDF. PDF header: as of 6/29/23 — confirm current certification. Many entries are utility / parish labs; most may not accept homeowner walk-ups. Call first. We are not scraping that PDF into an endorsement list tonight.
LDH drinking-water microbiology certified-lab PDFs Lab Certification page links microbiology lists. Downloadable PDFs we fetched tonight were dated January 2012 and February 2016 with long-expired certificate dates. Ask Lab Certification (225-219-5200) for the current microbiology list if you need it beyond the OPH private-well path. Do not use those old PDFs as a 2026 phone book. Prefer the LDH/OPH private-well bacteria path for homeowners. Unverified / stale-listed labs do not go on this page.
Free statewide private-well bacteria or PFAS program We searched LDH Private Well Owner Network, well-testing, and PFAS pages for a currently free homeowner bacteria or PFAS panel. None confirmed tonight. LDH PFAS communications address public-system rulemaking. Do not invent a free private-well PFAS signup. Call 1-888-293-7020 / PWI@LA.GOV if you heard of a temporary program.

LDH’s private-well bacteria path will not stand in for a full chemistry panel. Hardware-store strips are screening-only. Utility labs on the chemistry PDF are not automatic walk-up counters.

What Louisiana guidance actually warrants

Match the panel to the land. LDH private-well pages, EPA private-well pages, and CDC testing guidance line up on the core schedule:

When the Certificate of Analysis or the LDH written results arrive, more: how to read a well water report.

Hardware-store strips are screening-only. They are not an annual well test and they are not what a lender means by “tested.”

Hold times and collection

Plan around the 30-hour receipt clock and Monday–Thursday 2:00 p.m. testing. Do not collect into a dead weekend if the sample will be stale by Thursday’s run. Find the nearest parish health unit or OPH lab with the Private Water Well Sample Drop-Off Sites application linked from LDH’s sampling-instructions and Private Well Owner Network pages. Follow LDH’s collection procedure PDF / instructions — do not rinse the bottle, and do not invent a substitute container. More on bacteria clocks after weather events: what to test after a flood.

Mail-in kits that work from Louisiana

Independent mail-in labs ship to and from Louisiana as ordinary domestic US kits. They email a PDF. They are not selling you a softener in the same breath. For a lender or local compliance ask, confirm the analyzing lab meets what the underwriter named. Listed prices we checked on September 23, 2026:

Those are listed prices, not coupons. Kits change. Read the current product page before you buy. If the LDH $40 bacteria path covers your question — and you can hit the 30-hour / Mon–Thu clock — check that path before you spend $200 on a national kit for the same core bacteria question. For nitrate and metals, mail-in or a certified chemistry lab is the honest next step.

Side by side for a Louisiana well

The table scrolls sideways on a phone.

Typical paths for a Louisiana private well in 2026. Not a bid.
LDH/OPH bacteria LDH-certified chemistry lab Mail-in (Tap Score / NTL)
Best for Low-cost annual bacteria when the 30-hour / Mon–Thu clock works; loan letter when the bank asked LDH Nitrate, metals, VOCs, PFAS, lender-named chemistry Broader baseline panel and a PDF when local scheduling does not fit
PDF? Written / letter results. Ask how a copy arrives. Loan-letter path drafts an LDH letter for owner/lender. Yes — ask for the emailed Certificate of Analysis Yes. Email is the product
Sales visit? No No, if you stay with an independent lab No
Lender / CoC? Self-collect is labeled unofficial for legal purposes. Prefer the $150 loan-letter option when the bank wants LDH paperwork. Still ask if chemistry was named. Often what the underwriter named when the lab’s certification scope matches. Confirm before you sample Sometimes not. Ask before you sample. See home purchase / lender CoC

Real estate and lenders

Louisiana does not require private-well testing for real-estate transfer; lenders often do. LDH’s Real Estate Well Testing Requirements page points to the online Water & Sewer Approval Request for Loan Letter option (egov private-well tool, $150 tonight): a sanitarian collects, the lab analyzes total coliform / E. coli, results usually return to sanitarians within about 48 hours, and the department drafts a letter for the owner and/or lender. If the underwriter also wants chemistry (lead, nitrates, arsenic, and the rest), LDH points you to the certified chemistry lab list — confirm the lab, analyte list, certification date, and chain-of-custody form before you fill a bottle. A self-collect bacteria result can be a perfectly good health check and still bounce at the bank. More: home purchase / lender chain of custody.

Remind me to test my well every year

CDC and EPA say to test a private well at least once a year. We’ll send one email a year, about when your test is due, with your state’s lab options.

We only use your email for the yearly reminder. Unsubscribe anytime.

Thanks, you’re on the list. We’ll email you once a year when it’s time to test your well. Nothing else.

What to do in Louisiana

  1. Start at la.egov.com/ldh/privatewell or your parish health unit. Questions: 1-888-293-7020 / PWI@LA.GOV.
  2. Bacteria: self-collect at $40 (+ $3.50 online), or book a sanitarian path and confirm the live total. Hit the 30-hour clock and Mon–Thu 2 p.m. testing window.
  3. Lender letter: choose Water & Sewer Approval Request for Loan Letter ($150 on egov tonight) when the bank wants LDH paperwork.
  4. Nitrate, metals, or a broader panel: use the LDH chemistry labs PDF (confirm certs newer than 6/29/23) or mail-in. Call before you assume a utility lab takes walk-ups.
  5. PFAS: no LA private-well free PFAS program found tonight. Buy a Method 533 / 537.1 mail-in panel, or ask a commercial lab that offers those methods.
  6. If you want a broader PDF this month and the bacteria clock does not fit, use Tap Score / SimpleLab or National Testing Laboratories (Watercheck).
  7. Match the panel to the land. Bacteria every year. Nitrates every year, especially before a newborn. After a flood or hurricane, start with disinfection and bacteria.

Not this if…

  • A lender named a local lab and a chain-of-custody form. Use that lab. Do not substitute a self-collect bacteria bottle and hope — LDH labels those unofficial for legal purposes.
  • Someone offered a free in-home “test” that ends in a softener pitch. That is not on this page. See the Home Depot free-kit comparison.
  • You only wanted a strip from the hardware aisle. Fine as screening-only. It is not a certified analysis.
  • You planned to drop a chemistry bottle at an OPH bacteria counter for minerals or PFAS. That path is bacteriological. Chemistry is a certified chemistry lab or mail-in.
  • You treated the June 2023 chemistry PDF as a guaranteed walk-up phone book. Confirm current certification. Utility labs often serve utilities only. Call first.
  • You scraped a 2012 or 2016 microbiology PDF and called those labs “certified tonight.” Those lists are stale. We refused to republish them as current.
  • You assumed every sanitarian quote is exactly $75, or exactly $150. LDH pages disagree by channel. Read the order form.
  • You collected Friday for a Monday fantasy that blows the 30-hour clock. Testing is Mon–Thu at 2 p.m. The clock does not care about your weekend.
