Certified well water labs in Wisconsin (2026)
About 40 percent of Wisconsin residents drink from a private well. The DNR does not test your bottle for you. County desks, the State Lab of Hygiene, UW–Stevens Point, and a split DNR/DATCP certification list do. Here is that system, the county fees we could verify tonight, and mail-in kits that email a PDF.
The short version
- Call your county health department first. Many stock kits, run bacteria and nitrate in house, or hand you a State Lab / UWSP bottle. Ask about WellTAP if someone at home is pregnant, under 12, or immunocompromised and money is the blocker.
- Use the State Lab of Hygiene or UW–Stevens Point WEAL for a statewide mail-or-drop path. Both publish homeowner prices. Both refuse Friday bacteria samples. Both will bill you after analysis (or take payment on acceptance).
- For a commercial drop-off, open DNR’s certified-lab Excel lists (chemistry) and the DATCP bacteria lab portal. Certification does not mean they take a homeowner bottle. Call first.
How Wisconsin’s system actually works
The Wisconsin DNR private-well testing page is clear: you own the annual test. DNR’s floor for every private well is bacteria once a year (and when taste, color, or smell changes), nitrate once a year (and before a woman who is or may become pregnant uses the well), and arsenic at least once every five years — yearly if you are in Outagamie, Winnebago, or Brown counties or if a prior sample found arsenic.
Chemistry labs for drinking water are certified by DNR under NR 809 / NR 812. Microbiology (coliform / E. coli) for private wells is certified by DATCP. The live rosters sit on DNR’s Laboratories / certified lab lists page (January 2026 Excel files when we checked) and the bacteria lab search portal. Those lists are written for compliance work. Many entries will not take a residential bottle cold off the driveway. Call. Ask about private-well / residential samples, bottles, bacteria hold time, Friday rules, price, and whether they email a PDF.
Two public labs most homeowners actually use: the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene in Madison (kits ship free; you pay return shipping; billed after the work) and the UW–Stevens Point Water and Environmental Analysis Lab (WEAL), which mails bottles statewide and posts a Homeowner Package built around bacteria and nitrate.
EPA’s national page still points at a PDF of state certification programs. For Wisconsin, use the DNR lists and portals above.
County options we verified
Fees and drop-off windows live at the county desk. What we could verify with a public fee schedule or program page tonight:
The table scrolls sideways on a phone.
| Option | What they offer | Listed cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vernon County Health Department | Kit pickup. Bacteria and nitrate run locally. Arsenic and lead go to La Crosse County Health Lab. | Bacteria $30, nitrate $30, arsenic $37, lead $37 (page notes updates through 1/01/2026). | Return samples Mon–Thu 8:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m. only. No Friday or holiday samples. Return within 24 hours of collection. Arsenic/lead checks payable to La Crosse County Health Department Laboratory (cash or check). |
| Lafayette County Health Department | DATCP- and DNR-certified in house for bacteria and nitrate-nitrite. Kits during business hours. Other analytes routed to UW Oshkosh ERIC or WSLH. | Bacteria $30, nitrates $30, nitrite $30, lead $30, arsenic $30. | Submit Mon–Wed 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Thu 7:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Prices and days subject to change — confirm before you collect. |
| Green County Public Health | State-certified lab for nitrates and bacteria (total coliform / E. coli). Kit pickup at the Monroe office. Also stocks UWSP Homeowner Package kits. | Bacteria $30, nitrate $35 (listed on the county page when we checked via search). | Sample drop-off Mon–Wed 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. only. Deliver within 24 hours of collection. Call 608-328-9390 to reserve a kit. Confirm the fee sheet before you drive. |
| WellTAP (statewide via local / Tribal health) | No-cost bacteria, nitrate, fluoride, and metals panel for qualifying private-well households. | Free if you qualify. | Well must serve a pregnant person, a child 12 or under, or someone with a weakened immune system; must be the primary residence; and a financial or other burden must block paid testing. Apply through your local or Tribal health department — eligibility details vary by county. |
We looked for clear public homeowner fee sheets in Waukesha, Marathon, Manitowoc, and Dane. Several counties stock WSLH or UWSP kits and publish program pages without a single dollar figure we could quote honestly tonight, so they are not in the table. Call your county environmental health desk anyway. If your county runs a program we missed, use it.
State Lab of Hygiene and UW–Stevens Point prices
These two are the statewide consumer paths most Wisconsin pages point at. Prices below are what their sites listed on September 8, 2026.
The table scrolls sideways on a phone.
| Lab | Package | Listed cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| WSLH | Bacteria (total coliform / E. coli presence-absence) | $35 | Effective July 1, 2026 price list. ~2 business days. |
| WSLH | Nitrate | $35 | ~3 business days. Rush available. |
| WSLH | HUD / FHA / VA loan package (coliform, E. coli, lead, nitrate, nitrite+nitrate, nitrite) | $146 (rush $292) | 3-bottle kit. Ask the underwriter before you sample. |
| WSLH | Homeowner Package (bacteria, nitrate suite, fluoride, metals screen, hardness, VOC screen, atrazine screen) | $450 | 5-bottle kit. ~21 business days. Broad health + aesthetic panel. |
| WSLH | Metals screen / arsenic alone | Metals $97 · arsenic $38 | Kit ship-out is free. You pay return shipping. Do not ship Friday for Saturday delivery — the building is closed weekends. |
| UWSP WEAL | Homeowner Package (bacteria, nitrate+nitrite-N, pH, alkalinity, hardness, chloride, conductivity, corrosivity) | $78 | Bottles mail free. ~10 business days. Nitrate from this package is not SDWA compliance — ask if a regulator needs agency reporting. |
| UWSP WEAL | Comprehensive Homeowner (Homeowner + Standard Metals + DACT pesticide screen) | $191 | 3 bottles. Best first-time / five-year catch-up panel they advertise. |
| UWSP WEAL | Standard Metals / DACT screen | Metals $75 · DACT $45 | DACT if you are near corn ground. Metals if you have never checked arsenic, manganese, or lead. |
WSLH order line: 800-442-4618 (Dane County 608-224-6202), 2601 Agriculture Drive, Madison. UWSP WEAL: 715-346-3209, 800 Reserve Street, Stevens Point. Neither is a softener salesman.
What Wisconsin guidance actually warrants
Stick to the DNR cadence unless land use says otherwise:
- Every year: total coliform bacteria and nitrate.
- Every five years (yearly in Outagamie, Winnebago, Brown, or after a prior hit): arsenic.
- Once, then as needed: lead if you have old solder or soft / corrosive water; metals and manganese if staining or taste shows up; DACT / pesticide screen if you sit next to fertilized corn.
- After a flood or well work: bacteria first, on the hold-time clock. See our after-a-flood guide.
- For a sale or FHA/VA loan: WSLH’s HUD package exists for a reason. Confirm the analyte list and collector rules with the underwriter — see home purchase / lender CoC.
Hardware-store strips are screening-only. They are not an annual well test and they are not what a lender means by “tested.”
Hold times (the Friday trap)
DNR warns that homeowners often get false positives because the bottle sat too long — the agency’s own page still cites a 48-hour window for an accurate bacteria test. County desks are tighter. Vernon wants the bottle back within 24 hours and will not take Friday samples at all. Green County’s drop window is Mon–Wed only. UWSP WEAL will not accept bacteria on Fridays, will not take frozen bottles, and needs the sample within 40 hours of collection (24 hours for new-well / compliance work). WSLH tells you not to ship Friday for Saturday delivery because the building is closed.
Plan the collection day around the receiving hours, not around your Saturday free time. A voided sample is the clock, not a conspiracy. Details: what to test after a flood.
Mail-in kits that work from Wisconsin
Independent mail-in labs ship to and from Wisconsin as ordinary domestic US kits. They email a PDF. They are not selling you a softener in the same breath. Listed prices we checked on September 8, 2026:
- Tap Score / SimpleLab Essential Well: $209 listed (54 analytes; standard shipping and prepaid return on the product page).
- National Testing Laboratories WaterCheck Basic: $220 listed plus free delivery on watercheck.com. Return shipping is not included. Budget for overnight return on the bacteria bottle.
Those are listed prices, not coupons. Kits change. Read the current product page before you buy. For a Wisconsin-specific public-lab panel, WSLH and UWSP above are often cheaper than a national kit for bacteria + nitrate alone. PFAS is usually a separate kit — see our Method 533 / 537.1 page.
Side by side for a Wisconsin well
The table scrolls sideways on a phone.
| County health / WellTAP | WSLH or UWSP WEAL | Mail-in (Tap Score / NTL) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Cheap annual bacteria + nitrate, local bottle pickup, free WellTAP if you qualify | Statewide kits with published prices, FHA/VA package at WSLH, metals / pesticide add-ons at UWSP | Broader panel and a PDF without booking a Mon–Thu county slot |
| PDF? | Ask how the desk sends results (phone, email, or letter) | Yes — lab report is the product | Yes. Email is the product |
| Sales visit? | No | No | No |
| Lender / CoC? | Sometimes fine for a simple bacteria condition. Ask first. | WSLH’s HUD package is built for FHA/VA. Still confirm with the underwriter. | Sometimes not. Ask before you sample |
Real estate and lenders
Wisconsin does not impose a statewide private-well sampling mandate at every sale. Lenders and contracts still do. WSLH publishes a dedicated HUD/FHA/VA loan package for exactly that underwriting ask. Confirm the lab, the analyte list, and the form with the underwriter before you fill a bottle. A mail-in kit can be a perfectly good health file and still bounce at the bank. More on that shape: home purchase / lender chain of custody.
Remind me to test my well every year
CDC and EPA say to test a private well at least once a year. We’ll send one email a year, about when your test is due, with your state’s lab options.
Thanks, you’re on the list. We’ll email you once a year when it’s time to test your well. Nothing else.
What to do in Wisconsin
- Call your county or Tribal health department and ask for private-well / drinking-water kits. Ask about WellTAP if money or logistics are the blocker.
- If you want a published statewide kit, order from WSLH or UWSP WEAL. Read the Friday bacteria rules before you collect.
- If you want a local commercial drop-off, open DNR’s certified lab lists and the bacteria lab portal, pick a lab near you, then call. Ask about residential samples.
- If you just want a PDF this month, use Tap Score / SimpleLab or National Testing Laboratories (Watercheck). Do not collect the bacteria bottle on Friday.
- Match the panel to the land. Bacteria and nitrate every year. Arsenic on the five-year (or yearly Fox Valley) cadence. After a flood, start with bacteria.
Not this if…
- A lender named a local lab and a chain-of-custody form. Use that lab. Do not substitute a mail-in kit and hope.
- Someone offered a free in-home “test” that ends in a softener pitch. That is not on this page. See the Home Depot free-kit comparison.
- You only wanted a strip from the hardware aisle. Fine as screening-only. It is not a certified analysis.
- You expected a full statewide lab phone book with hours. We refused to invent one. DNR’s Excel lists plus a phone call is the honest path until we verify individual labs take homeowners.
